The Heart + Hashimoto's Thyroid Connection
Hypothyroidism, or having too little thyroid hormone, occurs with Hashimoto's.
During a Hashimoto's attack, though, too much thyroid hormone can be released. Symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism can be prevalent.
Virtually, all the symptoms of Hashimoto's disease are reversed - from those of hypothyroidism to hyperthyroidism.
Oily skin can become dry, fatigue can switch to almost manic activity, and the heart may go from feeling sluggish to being too active.
Hyperthyroidism: Excess thyroid hormone
Hyperthyroidism, or too much thyroid hormone, can harm the heart.
The classic symptoms include:
sleeplessness
heat intolerance
excess sweating
weight loss
extreme hunger
loose bowels
Excess thyroid hormone also causes the heart to beat harder and faster and may trigger abnormal heart rhythms.
One is atrial fibrillation, a disorganized rhythm in the heart's upper chambers.
A related symptom is palpitations, a sudden awareness of your heartbeat.
People with hyperthyroidism may also have high blood pressure.
In a person with clogged, stiff heart arteries, the combination of a forceful heartbeat and elevated blood pressure may lead to chest pain or angina.

CAUSES OF HASHIMOTO'S
People who are genetically-inclined can have several endogenous and environmental factors that may trigger thyroid autoimmunity.
These multiple factors can increase antigen presentation in the thyroid and consequently leading to reduced immune tolerance.
Why are more people being diagnosed with Hashimoto's?
HT is one of the most prevalent autoimmune diseases. It is provoked in genetically susceptible individuals by several triggers.

How Hashimoto's Can Cause Anxiety
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is the most common thyroid disease ....and it can cause a wide range of symptoms.
Hashimoto's affects the way we feel, look and even think. It can be what's causing you to not feel like yourself.
Common mentally-related symptoms may include:
Anxiety.
Nervousness.
Irritability.
Depression.
Brain fog
But How ????
The thyroid gland creates and regulates neurotransmitters like serotonin.Low serotonin levels are linked to depression, anxiety, and mood.
When your thyroid is not functioning properly, these neurotransmitters become erratic, potentially causing anxiety and panic attacks.
Anxious feelings can be made even worse after discovering you have a thyroid disorder, because now you’re worried about your health. But Total Thyroid can help!
If you have been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder and are experiencing unexplained anxiety, or if you suspect a thyroid disorder, consult with the integrated medical team at Total Thyroid.

What Exactly is Estrogen Dominance?
Estrogen dominance can occur:
When there is excessive estradiol (a type of estrogen) and too little progesterone.
When estrogen is broken into antagonistic metabolites (one metabolite is "good" and are "bad") shown below.
When estrogen is broken into antagonistic metabolites (one metabolite is "good" and are "bad") shown below.
Estrogen dominance occurs when estrogen and progesterone are not in balance.
Reasons Why Estrogen Levels Become Too High
#1
the body is simply making too much estrogen
exposure to estrogen,i.e. birth control pills
the body is not able to eliminate estrogen naturally
exposure to estrogen,i.e. birth control pills
the body is not able to eliminate estrogen naturally
#2
Estrogen gets broken up into several metabolites; one metabolite is protective and beneficial while two are harmful.
GOOD METABOLITE
2-hydroxyestrone (2-OH): An estrogen metabolite that does not stimulate cell growth and can block the action of stronger, potentially cancer-causing estrogens.
BAD METABOLITES
4-hydroxyestrone (4-OH): This metabolite is potentially harmful and can worsen symptoms.
16-alpha-hydroxyestrone (16-OH): This metabolite is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.
NOTE: The health of your liver, the digestive tract and genetics all play a major part in the deveolpment of these metabolites.
SYMPTOMS
of Estrogen Dominance
- PMS
- Fibroids/Cysts/Polyps
- Endometriosis
- Breast lumps or cancer
- Thyroid nodules
- Thyroid cancer
- Elevated anti-thyroglobulin antibodies, indicating Hashimoto's
- Ovarian cancer
- Infertility
- Miscarriages
- Water retention
- Cellulite
- Brown spots or discoloration on upper lip or side of the face
- Mood swings
- Irregular or heavy periods
- Hair loss
- Headaches/migraines
- Brain fog
- Insulin resistance
- Lowered libido (sex drive)
- Osteoporosis
- Autoimmunity
- Prostate problems in men

WHAT ARE THYROID NODULES?
A thyroid nodule is an abnormal growth of thyroid cells that form a lump in the thyroid gland.
The two most common types of thyroid nodules are benign or non-cancerous. These are:
Colloid nodules
Follicular adenomas

HASHIMOTO'S AND DIGESTIVE ISSUES
What is INTESTINAL HYPERPERMEABILITY?
Increased Intestinal Permeability (IIP) occurs when the junctions within our intestines become more loose (leaky).
This leads to foods, chemicals, drugs etc. which normally would be blocked from entering the bloodstream being allowed to flow throughout the body.
Our immune system targets these unwanted substances with the bloodstream which causes an immune response and inflammation ...hallmarks of Hashimoto's hypothyroidism.

What is Hashimoto's?
According to the American Thyroid Association:
The term “Thyroiditis” refers to “inflammation of the thyroid gland”. There are many possible causes of thyroiditis.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. It is an autoimmune disorder involving chronic inflammation of the thyroid.
This condition tends to run in families.
Over time, the ability of the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones often becomes impaired and leads to a gradual decline in function and eventually an underactive thyroid (Hypothyroidism).
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis occurs most commonly in middle aged women, but can be seen at any age, and can also affect men and children.
Hashimoto's thyroiditisis is also referred to as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis or autoimmune thyroiditis.
So How are Hashimoto's and Digestive Issues Connected?
Based on various studies autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto's may be linked to digestive issues.
With Hashimoto’s disease, it is important to have your gut thoroughly evaluated to identify what may be breaking down your intestinal barrier.
Many things can lead to Gut Issues including:
stress
medications,
food sensitivities including gluten
sugar
excessive exercise
poor sleeping habits
dental infections
gut dysbiosis
intestinal parasites
viruses i.e. Epstein-Barr, C-Dif
yeast overgrowth
low stomach acid
poor diet
emotional or physical trauma
and more
What Can Be Done?
At Total Thyroid, we perform a comprehensive evaluation.
By identifying a patient's unique health factors, our medical team provides a customized Hashimoto's plan for relief of symptoms and a tamping down of the immune response.

Brain Hypothyroisim
Are You Concerned About Brain Fog?
Brain hypothyroidism is when thyroid hormone blood levels are normal but autoimmune Hashimoto's antibodies are present (euthyroid).
The brain is attacked first by the autoimmune system causing symptoms of brain fog, anxiety, balance issues and loss of clarity.
A study conducted with patients who had been diagnosed with Hashimoto's showed lower blood flow in the brain, specifically the frontal lobe.
The conclusion of this study stated:
"may suggest a higher than expected involvement of CNS [Central Nervous System] in thyroid autoimmune disease."
The title and authors of this paper published on PubMed.gov are:
Brain perfusion abnormalities in patients with euthyroid autoimmune thyroiditis
M Piga 1, A Serra, L Deiana, G L Loi, L Satta, M Di Liberto, S Mariotti
Affiliations expand
PMID: 15290119 DOI: 10.1007/s00259-004-1625-7
Conclusion: These results show the high prevalence of brain perfusion abnormalities in euthyroid HT. These abnormalities are similar to those observed in cases of severe Hashimoto's encephalopathy and may suggest a higher than expected involvement of CNS in thyroid autoimmune disease.
